“It’s True. It’s All True” – How a Wish Changed a Skeptic’s Mind

Loreen Kelley, Bon Iver, Justin Vernon, Make-A-Wish
I love skeptical minds. They reject glib answers in search of truth. They question, they doubt, they investigate. And if you win a skeptic over? Well, you earn a smart, thoughtful advocate.

Stay Strong, Solve the Problem: The Differences in a Dad's Journey

Make-A-Wish Fathers Day
In my past life, prior to working at Make-A-Wish, I worked in online communications for Autism Speaks. As I was exposed to countless parents who were grappling with an autism diagnosis for their child, I noticed an interesting trend: Moms sought each other out; they posted to their Facebook profiles asking for advice. They poured their hearts out to each other, seeking solace in the community of their friends and family. Dads preferred to stand back. They would go online at night (typically after everyone in their household had gone to bed) and do countless hours of research. A new obstacle had presented itself in their life’s plan and it was up to them to solve it. Men are protectors and fixers.

There’s a side to being diagnosed with a serious illness that not many people discuss – and that’s the emotional side. We talk about the medicine and therapy that combats the illness while the psychological effects often make us too uncomfortable.

From Cinematographer to Wish Granter

Linda and Chris the day he received his uniform and wings.
Ever since I heard about how Make-A-Wish was formed, it has always seemed more like fiction than truth. The plot was too unfair - a 7-year-old boy knew that his illness would soon take his life. The characters were too good - friends who worked together to give one day of hope to a mother and her son. But it's real. All of it. Kenny Yanga, a cinematographer and editor with Relentless, Inc., can tell you for certain because he met the people whose actions have impacted the lives of millions of others all around the world.

4 Wish Kids Who Love Science

Delilah, Make-A-Wish Greater Bay Area, scuba diving
Delilah coasts through the water, her flippers propelling her forward. Colorful fish and coral pass beneath her as she concentrates on breathing through her regulator. Being submerged in the water feels like seeing the world for the first time. It’s a little nerve-wracking, but she knows that she has Steve right beside her to show her what to do.

How 3 Communities Empowered Local Wish Kids

The wind whips out Kaheem’s cape as he surveys his city. The people of Washington, DC, are in trouble – he can feel it. There are evildoers afoot! Luckily for them, they have Super Kaheem to come to the rescue.

Linda wears glasses, a green cap and a Make-A-Wish sweatshirt, a sort of casual-but-spirited look. Her grey hair peeks out from underneath her hat, and her blue eyes have a kindness behind them that is seldom matched.
