Stay Strong, Solve the Problem: The Differences in a Dad's Journey

Make-A-Wish Fathers Day
In my past life, prior to working at Make-A-Wish, I worked in online communications for Autism Speaks. As I was exposed to countless parents who were grappling with an autism diagnosis for their child, I noticed an interesting trend: Moms sought each other out; they posted to their Facebook profiles asking for advice. They poured their hearts out to each other, seeking solace in the community of their friends and family. Dads preferred to stand back. They would go online at night (typically after everyone in their household had gone to bed) and do countless hours of research. A new obstacle had presented itself in their life’s plan and it was up to them to solve it. Men are protectors and fixers.

The Moment Was Ours

“Holding my wonderful daughter in my arms, we danced large circles around the empty room. Whatever troubles we’d left behind in difficult months and hard years; whatever trials still lay ahead; none of that mattered. The moment was ours. It was ours forever.”
