I mentioned in an that Make-A-Wish depends entirely on referrals. Without referrals, we don’t find out about eligible kids. If we don’t connect with eligible kids, we can’t grant wishes.
This year, approximately 27,000 kids will be diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. Last year, we granted more than 14,000 wishes. And we had 14,900 wish referrals.
And here’s the really important part – we grant wishes because we think it helps kids feel better. From the time they learn they’re eligible to years after their wish comes true, we’re convinced that it improves their state of mind. And that better state of mind can give them the edge in living with or even overcoming their medical condition.
Every kid with a life-threatening medical condition deserves any X factor that can help them feel better. That’s why we think of the nearly 12,000 children who were not referred to Make-A-Wish … and aspire to make it zero.
We also think about why we don’t have more referrals. Certainly, the long-lived misunderstanding that we serve only terminally ill children is part of the problem.
It’s also possible that many people don’t realize how they can be part of the referral process. Here are the people who can get the referral process started:
- a potential wish kid
- a medical professional
- a parent, legal guardians or family members with detailed knowledge of the child's current medical condition
You might be able to get us closer to granting every eligible kid’s wish, just by filling out an online referral inquiry form. I hope you’ll find out more, and help us make a real stride in granting every eligible kid’s wish.
