The Student Government Association and DECA members at Houston High School in Germantown, Tenn., combined forces to raise funds to sponsor a child’s wish through Make-A-Wish® Mid-South.
Creating a wishing well, these dedicated students pushed the well up and down the halls collecting contributions from fellow students. They called this campaign “Miles of Smiles,” since a pedometer was placed on the wheel of the well to see just how long (literally) it would take to raise $5,000. In the end, Houston High students raised $5,609 and walked about 3 miles.
They granted Abby’s wish on stage at an audition for “Bye Bye Birdie.” Abby’s wish was to go to the Walt Disney Resort, but she also had a strong desire to be a “star” (but not in her hometown of Milan, Tenn., mind you!). Houston students invited her to try out for this production. Although she won the part, she was told her trip to Orlando, Fla., would prevent actual participation. Abby did not mind one bit as she boarded the limousine bound for an unforgettable adventure, thanks to the many friends she never knew she had until the day her wish came true.
