Inspired by wish child, Ryan, the 8th annual "Heroes & Helmets For Hope" brings together our local firefighters, wish kids & their families for a one-day donation drive to help grant the wishes of critically-ill children in Kern County. Firefighters will be collecting donations outside the TV-17 Studios as well as at the intersections of Stockdale & Gosford and at Olive & Knudsen.
A Drive-Thru BBQ Lunch, including deep pit sandwich, chips and drink, will be available from 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. for $7.00.
This annual fundraiser was inspired by wish child Ryan Wiggins who was diagnosed at the age of 4 years old with leukemia.
In 2010, Ryan’s Dad and Grandfather, both firefighters, joined with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to launch an event that would join City and County firefighters in a citywide donor drive to benefit Make-A-Wish Central California.
Ryan, now 13 years old and in the 7th grade, is cancer free. She had her wish granted six years ago when she and her family took a trip of a lifetime to Disney World. The Wiggins Family continues to be ambassadors for our local Make-A-Wish Foundation by spearheading this annual event.
Donations will benefit Kern County Wish kids and Make-A-Wish Central California, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. This past year, Make-A-Wish of Central California, granted a total of 140 wishes. An average cost of a wish is $6,000. Make-A-Wish never turns away a wish request from a qualified child.
