Twelve-year-old Jasmine’s wish didn’t take her far from home, but that was the way she wanted it. She wished to be a nurse so she could hold newborn babies at nearby McKay-Dee Hospital Center in Ogden, Utah.
Wish granters from the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Utah let Jasmine know that she would indeed be going to McKay-Dee Hospital Center, but left out some exciting details to build the suspense. For one, when it came time to go to the hospital, a LifeFlight helicopter picked up the awestruck girl in front of her house.
Upon landing at the hospital, Jasmine was greeted by the nurse manager of the newborn intensive care unit (NICU), who gave her a teddy bear, a basket of gifts from the other nurses, and a card. The basket contained a statue of a nurse holding a baby, a holiday tree ornament with engraved baby footprints, and her own baby stethoscope and blood pressure cuff.
Of course, as a nurse Jasmine had to get into uniform. That included dressing in her own set of scrubs and gown. Her name badge identified her as “Jasmine – Future RN.” She then washed her hands and went to the NICU. There, she observed several procedures before being given a newborn baby to hold and rock. As her wish came true, Jasmine smiled brightly and said she was having “so much fun.”
Jasmine’s wish experience has cemented her career goal. She plans to be a nurse when she grows up.
