For more than 30 years, Mexican singer Vicente Fernández has charted hits, sold multiplatinum albums, and earned Grammy nominations. He has also become the world’s best musician in the eyes of Make-A-Wish® kid Juan. The 11-year-old aspires to be a singer himself and wanted to share his talent with his favorite entertainer. He asked volunteers with the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Southern Florida to help him meet the “King of Rancheros” so he could sing for him.

Juan, along with his 7-year-old sister Maria and their parents, flew to Los Angeles, where Vicente was performing with a concert lineup that included Lupillo Rivera, El General, and Alejandro Fernández. Before Juan attended the event, he spent a day at Universal Studios, where wish granters report that the family was treated like stars.

Juan and his family attended Vicente’s concert the day after their theme park adventure and slipped backstage before the curtain call. Maria dozed off in her wheelchair during the wait because the famous singer only ends his performances after the people stop clapping. First to come backstage was Lupillo Rivera, who removed his personal belongings and autographed them for the children. Juan received a signed necktie, and Maria was presented with Lupillo’s autographed handkerchief and a kiss. Next came El General, who enthusiastically talked with the children and their parents.

Lastly, Alejandro Fernández entered the room, followed later by his father, Vicente. Alejandro comforted Maria and talked with Juan. Shortly afterwards, Vicente arrived and excitedly greeted Juan. He then began to serenade Maria as she slept. Juan gathered up his courage and asked his new friend if they could sing together. Touched, the veteran entertainer asked everyone to quiet down so that he could appreciate Juan’s singing. The talented boy performed a tune, and Vicente tenderly filled in the words when Juan needed some help. Wish granters report that Juan’s voice and its spirit touched everyone in the room.
