Becky, Elynn and J.J. all had a wish to visit a movie set and experience the thrill of being treated like a star while getting a behind-the-scenes look at a movie in production. Little did they know that they would get the “ride” of a lifetime with the silver screen’s most lovable car, Herbie, and some of today’s most popular movie and auto-racing stars.
The three wish kids were treated to an unforgettable day on the set of Disney’s “Herbie: Fully Loaded” at the Irwindale Raceway, located about 30 miles east of Hollywood. Becky, Elynn and J.J. were guests of “Herbie” executive producer Michael Fottrell and DisneyHand, worldwide outreach for The Walt Disney Company, which was instrumental in helping to make the kids’ wishes come true.
When they arrived on the set, Becky, Elynn and J.J. said they felt some of the same nerves that actors do when they step on the set for the first time. Their stage fright evaporated instantly though as the cast and crew greeted them and prepared them for their special day. Each of the kids were presented with a personalized director’s chair and seated next to the movie’s lead actor, ultra-popular Lindsay Lohan, and two more of the movie’s mega-superstars, Michael Keaton and Matt Dillon.
From there, the trio watched the scenes unfold, viewed playbacks with the crew, and ate popsicles between takes – a special treat enjoyed by 9-year-old J.J.
In addition to talking with the stars and some of the racing drivers who appear in “Herbie,” the kids got to jump in the driver’s seat of the spunky VW Bug for an imaginary spin around the track.
“Sitting in Herbie is something I’ll remember forever!” J.J. said.
All three kids also were invited to appear in a scene with Matt Dillon that was eventually edited from the final version of the movie. Still, the experience of getting makeup, receiving instruction from director Angela Robinson and then shooting the scene with Dillon capped a terrific day for the kids and their families.
“I will remember it all,” said Becky, 11. “Going through the makeup, getting my own director’s chair with my name on it and then filming, the whole process was great!”
For Elynn, a 13-year-old aspiring actress, the day has inspired her to continue pursuing her acting dreams.
“I was very excited and in disbelief that this visit was happening for me,” she said. “Meeting Lindsay and her family was my favorite part, and I even got to joke around with her.”
Besides the action-packed experience of being on the set, the kids said they enjoyed the opportunity to make new friends with each other. They also wanted to thank everyone who helped make their wishes possible, especially DisneyHand.
As “Herbie” races across the screen toward victory lane beginning June 22, Becky, Elynn and J.J. already feel like winners for sharing an incredible day with the free-wheeling car and his all-star friends.
