“ I wish to have my book published”
Mandie , age 16
South Dakota Chapter

Mandie, from South Dakota, was 16 when she was referred to the Make-A-Wish Foundation® . She has Freidreich's ataxia, a progressive genetic condition that attacks the nervous system and weakens body muscles.

While many children who are living with a life-threatening illness shy away from discussing the experiences associated with their condition, Mandie took a much different approach.

Mandie is a talented writer, and throughout her battle with ataxia, she has used her writing as an outlet as she deals with the intense emotions and physical changes that she has experienced. One of these writing projects included a book, which traces her history prior to being diagnosed with ataxia, through her treatments to her optimistic perspectives for the future.

When wish granters from the South Dakota chapter asked Mandie what she would wish for, she asked whether they would publish her book, entitled Through the Eyes of a Child. She wanted it to be used as a tool to let other children with a disability know that they are not alone and that there is always hope for a cure.

A graphic artist provided illustrations to be included in the book, and it was published by a printing and graphics company. Once it was finished and multiple copies had been made, the Make-A-Wish Foundation arranged for Mandie to have her own book signing ceremony, which was well attended by members of her family and the community.

Inspired Thoughts

  • Congrats, Mandie, on being strong and beating your weak muscles. I also have a condition in my legs that make my legs weak. You are my inspiration in that I might also be able to tell my story with other kids who have my condition. You make the world a better place. Good luck in everything you do!

  • Mandie, writing a book through your eyes really opens the eyes of many people. My son is autistic, and I wish he could write what it's like to live with his disability. Keep writing and congratulations on your book!
