“ I wish to be a princess!”
Katye , age 11
Maine Chapter

With elegance and charm, Katye poses in front of the finished product.

Eleven-year-old Katye is living like royalty, thanks to the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Maine. Before her transformation, she juggled around some ideas for her wish experience – including a limo ride and kittens. In the end, she decided she wanted to be a princess with a princess room. But she had some requirements. The room had to have a canopy bed, a princess throne, and lots of pink roses.

Katye's wish granters – who dubbed themselves "fairy godmothers" – set about transforming the young girl's bedroom into an enchanted room. They ordered furniture, carpeting, paint, and accessories such as wands and tiaras. While the renovations took place, Katye received regal treatment as an up-and-coming princess.

Princess Katye's family surrounds her during the presentation of her new bedroom.

First, she took a limousine ride to Boston, but stopped for a visit to Hillview Market & Deli in Saco, Maine, for Italian sandwiches. As a princess of uncommon beauty, she also received a photo shoot at Glamour Shots. Additionally, a giant stuffed bear as big as Katye was delivered to her. She named it Princess Emma.

One of the most extravagant highlights was when Katye and her father, stepmother, and sister traveled to downtown Kennebunkport, Maine, for lunch. As they walked, they encountered a white carriage with red velvet seats and a horse named Tiny. The horse's owner introduced herself and offered an hour-long ride to the young princess and her entourage. A Make-A-Wish® volunteer had a white fur cape, a gleaming tiara, and elbow-lengthed white gloves for Katye. The family then set off for a tour of the town's mansions and monastery.

Katye struts her stuff next to Cinderella.

While Katye was relishing in her royal treatment, volunteers – including a painter, carpenter, and artist – carefully renovated the 11-year-old's room. Fresh paint went up on the walls while rose-colored carpet was laid on the floor. A local artist painted pink roses around the windows and added a castle with a princess and white horse on a wall. Katye's throne couldn't fit in the bedroom, so it was placed in the living room. Her elegant canopy bed made it in, though.

The new bedroom was unveiled to its special occupant on a Sunday afternoon after a family trek to the movies. Even Katye's sister, Jodie, received a little surprise – moon and star decorations in her room. Katye was so thrilled with the finished product that she set off to find her neighborhood friends to show it off.
