Nicco's Wish to have his Car Restored

Wish kid Nicco was in constant motion as a child and his parents could barely get him to sit still. His mom Cristina said he loved “anything with wheels” including bicycles, motorcycles, trucks and cars and always preferred being active outside. However, just before he turned 16, she and Nicco’s dad noticed he started to slow down considerably and wasn’t feeling well. After he underwent medical testing, the family got the devastating news that Nicco had lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system. While his friends were busy experiencing high school and the joys of teenage life, he had to go through years of chemotherapy and other medical treatments, which were incredibly difficult. Nicco was in and out of the hospital, lost his hair and had to spend time isolating due to his compromised immunity. But he always kept a positive outlook, stayed on top of his homework and managed to graduate from high school despite his health challenges.

When Nicco was referred to Make-A-Wish at age 17, he expressed really wanting a wish that he could enjoy on a daily basis during the pandemic and something that was personally meaningful to him. Based on his love of “wheels”, it was no surprise that he wished to have his GMC Sierra truck restored. We were delighted to grant it, because we knew how much it meant to Nicco since he missed out on so much during high school.

Although the pandemic created many challenges, Make-A-Wish was able to safely deliver Nicco’s wish earlier this year with generous support from a community of donors. We worked with a trusted vendor on a number of upgrades including: interior color change, headlight/tail light/brake light updates, running board steps, updated mirrors, and a full paint job in his requested matte black color. We then worked with Cristina to surprise Nicco on his front yard as a flat-bed truck pulled up with his shiny, souped up truck. He was overjoyed and couldn’t wait to hop in and take his parents for a ride around town. 

Today, Nicco loves driving his new truck to his job at a bicycle shop and is looking forward to riding off to college after the pandemic.
